"So What's the Catch?"

I have discovered something interesting, people are fearful of anything that is "Free".

I have a little coffee shop. I call it the "Holy Grounds Cafe" and it's in a mall where a lot of people come to walk everyday. I have a sign on the door that stands wide open. The sign says "FREE COFFEE, BOTTLED WATER, POP and HONEY BUNS". People nearly break their necks trying to read the sign and walk by at the same time. I hear them talking and say to one another,, "Free? I wonder what the catch is?" If they dare to come and check us out they will discover that the only catch is that they have to serve themselves.

People also have problems with their relationship with Jesus. They just can't imagine that they don't have to do something to pay for eternal life. the idea that someone else paid the price for their sins just doesn't seem to register. Americans live in a culture that is so caught up in making the almighty dollar that to get something for free just don't seem right.

I'm convinced that what Jesus did when he died for our sins indeed wasn't "right" but He did it anyway for me. And he did it for you as well.

I understand where you are coming from, but there is almost always a catch, some price to pay... especially with Jesus. Perhaps not for you (as you have already accepted him), but there is a big price for me since I have not accepted Jesus. Although there are many different reasons for me, but biggest price is my ability to be open minded about where I came from, why I'm here, and where I am going. I must give that up to have faith, I must deny the things I've always known to be true, and I'm no longer allowed to question my beliefs, as that is a lack of faith. My ability to question the truth is extremely important to me, more important than eternal life. As an atheist, I give up the same amount as you if you were to reject Jesus.

Ferret thank you for your honest response. Let's keep this conversation going. I enjoy the openness on discussion about faith.

You are correct about there always being a catch. In the case of a relationship with Jesus Christ it's the same as with any "love relationship" While love might be given freely, it means nothing unless someone on the other end receives it. Like a gift that I "give" to you, you must take as yours.

So whjat's been the main hang up of your "taking" or "receiving" Gocd's free give. I mean more so than you have already stated.

Also how about sharing some of your background with me, where did all of this come from. Your culture, lack of influence in your life as a child or did this coem up recently?

Well I'm from Arizona, my parents are for the most part non-religious but went to a Unitarian church most of my childhood. They told me what they believed, but encouraged me to do my own searching.

I guess the main hang up for me has been that I've never felt, seen, or heard God or his love. The idea of God has never seemed logical to me. My beliefs aren't set in stone, I think people should always question their ideas, but until I see some kind of unmistakable proof of the existence of God I don't think I will ever be able to believe.

We are in part products of our background but we don't need to stay there. Part of what God has always been up to is actively pursueing a love relationship with us.

My recommendatrion to you is to keep an open mind and keep searching for God's interaction in the world around you. Look at how He is constantly seeking to demonstrate His love to you.

I hope you bookmark my blog or put it in your favorite places and fromt ime to check in to see what I'm up to. I also have have some other sites: www.lawenforcementfamily.com

I think your right about people being products of their backgrounds. I'll try and keep an open mind and see how life presents itself to me.

Thanks for the kind words and keep up the good work, I can tell a lot of people really appreciate everything you do!
